Here's a very displayable, "as found--all original" , 1916 California Porcelain License Plate. See photos-- some edge chipping, one clean extra hole and an abrasion in the porcelain between the bear an the number 3.
These plates were issued in pairs. One of the pair had the bear with the number stamped into it that matched the number on the plate. The other one, like this one, had a bear with a long blank area, and it was expected that the owner would scratch their name into the blank area.
